The year is coming to an end, and for many, that means it’s time to gather and ring in the New Year. But if you are experiencing infertility issues, understandably, you may not be in a festive mood. Here are some of our coping tips and self-care measures to help you navigate the holidays.
Make Your Emotional Health Your Main Priority
If you’re experiencing infertility, you’re allowed to put yourself first for the sake of your emotional well-being. For some, that can mean staying in instead of going to various activities and events. Whether it’s a large New Year’s party or a small get-together, if it feels like it will be too much for you, it is perfectly fine to decline. Your only obligation is to tend to your own emotional needs. And, if you do decide to go, make contingency plans for a graceful exit.
Build Your Emotional Support System
Throughout your fertility journey, and especially at year’s end, you need to be able to count on your inner circle. Find your tribe by identifying the people you know you can count on to be there for you. Tell them about what you’re going through internally. If you’re concerned about unexpected or embarrassing questions, it can be helpful to have some planned responses ready so that you don’t have to explain everything you’re going through. New Year’s can also be a great time to express your appreciation for your support system.
Some Social Gatherings May Be Beneficial
Rather than avoid all gatherings, you may enjoy an outing, whether for dinner, a simple walk, or even a trip out of town. And for some, this may be a good time to host a get-together, where you can just plan the activities and skip any uncomfortable topics.
You may want to embrace the hopeful spirit of New Year’s and use this time to create some new traditions. Remember, if you have a partner, they are also going through these same experiences and may want to share their feelings. You can use this season to grow closer and spend time together. Otherwise, your friends, family, or fertility support group can be great sounding boards.
Help and Think of Others
Reaching out and helping those less fortunate may provide a healthy outlet and an opportunity to refocus your energy. Among the ways you can give back are donating to charities, helping with household chores or projects, or volunteering at your favorite non-profit.
